Neck & Cervical Spine Exercises

Gentle, doctor-recommended routines to alleviate cervical stiffness, headache tension, and posture strain.

Patient Instructions Before Starting:

Perform these exercises in a comfortable, upright seated or standing posture. Never force movements through sharp or radiating pain. Breathe steadily throughout each repetition.

1. Chin Tucks (Cervical Retraction)

2–3 Sets | 10 Reps (5-sec hold)

How to perform: Sit upright with shoulders relaxed. Look straight ahead. Without tilting your head down, gently pull your chin straight backward like making a slight double chin. Feel a gentle stretch at the base of your skull.

Clinical Purpose: Realigns forward head posture, strengthens deep cervical flexors, and relieves pressure on lower cervical discs.

2. Isometric Neck Strengthening (4 Directions)

3 Sets | 5–10 Sec Hold Each

How to perform: Place your palm against your forehead. Push your head gently into your palm without letting your head move. Repeat by placing your palm against the back of your head, and then against each temple.

Clinical Purpose: Builds static muscular endurance in the cervical spine without aggravating sensitive facet joints.

3. Upper Trapezius & Levator Scapulae Stretch

3 Reps Each Side | 20–30 Sec Hold

How to perform: Sit upright. Gently tilt your right ear toward your right shoulder until a mild stretch is felt down the left side of your neck. To target the levator muscle, turn your nose slightly downward toward your armpit.

Clinical Purpose: Relieves chronic tension knots from computer screen use and alleviates tension headaches.

4. Scapular Retraction (Shoulder Blade Pinches)

2 Sets | 15 Reps (3-sec hold)

How to perform: Stand or sit tall. Pull your shoulder blades backward and slightly downward as if squeezing a pencil between them. Keep your shoulders relaxed away from your ears.

Clinical Purpose: Counters rounded shoulders and improves thoracic posture, creating a stable base for the neck.
